Introduction to Pets

In GW1, pets were basically a tool for pulling, tanking, or distracting the enemy. In GW2, pets are a much more important tool in the Ranger’s build. In GW1, your choice of pet mattered hardly at all. In GW2, it might be the difference between wiping and pwning, between rallying or being defeated.

Shape Matters

The easiest way to see how much it matter which pet you bring to the battle is to look at an overview of the over 100 pet skills in the game. 100? Yup, three basic skills for each of the pet families (e.g. Bears or Moas) an each pet brings its own unique skill to slot F4 (except for the HoM pets: they have an identical skill set to one of the standard pets).

The chart below shows that some pet families are better at dishing out conditions (bears and devourers), others are better at supporting with boons (cats), and still others are great at providing potential for Pet/Ranger combo fields (devourers). If you’re interested in spiking, the drake family has three skills dishing out 250+ damage, jellyfish offer two, and fish and devourers one each.

(The chart is a tad misleading because it double-counts amphibious animals, even though some of the skills are nearly identical on land or in water.)

Standard Layout

Pet skills are similar to downed ones in that they follow a pattern across the families:

  • Skill #1 is a spammable (no recharge) skill that does a small amount of damage for auto-attacking. Damage is usally about 70-80 with a short range, but a few pets get triple that.
  • Skill #2 usually has a medium recharge (~20s), does more respectable damage (~120-180), and causes some type of condition or other effect.
  • Skill #3 is often a long-range skill with longer-lasting effect and more damage (assuming it causes any).

The fourth skill is unique for each pet (again, HoM pets being the exception, since their skill-bar is identical to a standard pet). The different species in each family offer similar skills in slot four, but the variation is much greater: a black bear can cause 10s of weakness while a siamoth has a chance of giving itself every boon in the game for ten seconds.
